A practical, five-step guide
How to tailor your resume to a job description
Turn one job description into a clearer resume. Explore five visual steps, from finding relevant evidence to checking the copy you submit.
Separate the work, must-haves and useful extras.
Read the whole role
Sort the actual work, essential skills and useful extras before you edit.
Read the details
Use the employer’s full job description, including responsibilities, qualifications and application instructions. A short listing preview can leave out important context. Separate explicit must-haves from preferred or optional skills. If the wording is ambiguous, mark it for review instead of assuming every named tool is essential.
Write down the main work the person will do. This gives you a better editing target than a disconnected list of keywords.

Experience with Docker is a plus.
Keep preferred skills separate from requirements. Check ambiguous wording before treating it as essential.
Match each requirement to evidence
Choose a requirement below to see the difference between experience, a listed skill and missing evidence.

For each important requirement, find a specific resume passage: a task, project, qualification or relevant outcome. A skill listed on its own gives less context than an example of using it. Note what is supported, what needs explanation, and what you cannot honestly claim.
If a useful detail is missing from your resume, verify it against your own records before adding it. Keep your contribution distinct from the team’s work.
Use the AI resume matcher to review the comparison, then check its excerpts against your source material.

Move the most relevant experience into view and replace vague wording with a clear action and context. Use the employer’s terminology when it accurately describes your experience. Do not add skills, job titles or metrics simply because the role asks for them.

AI review is optional. Treat a proposed rewrite as a draft: compare it with the original and approve only statements you can support. Check verbs such as “led,” “built” and “owned” carefully; a small wording change can imply a different level of responsibility.
Use match scores to investigate text alignment and gaps. They are not interview probabilities, proof of ability or a reason to insert unsupported claims. A higher score still needs a factual review.
